Job Description:

Function of Position:

The Web Specialist will assist in the administration, maintenance, development and end-user support of the College’s Web site as a member of a project team. This position will act as a technical resource to the college community and assist them in the development of Web based solutions.  The position will help develop and support a variety of web and mobile based applications as directed. Typically, the position will be a member of a project team. However, there will be occasions where the position will be performing as individual contributor. There may be evening and weekend hours from time to time depending on the nature of the project or support needs.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Design and develop Web based solutions to meet the needs of the college community; activities may include interface design, database development and system design
  • Assist the college community with issues, problems, trouble-shooting and questions concerning the college’s Web site in order to provide effective technical direction and support
  • Research new Web related technology and make recommendations on how to incorporate recommendations into the College’s Web site
  • Provide technical leadership and programming support for the design, development, and maintenance of third party and custom developed applications maintained by the web team; this includes support for all Web Services maintained, MCC mission-critical websites and mobile applications
  • Maintain technical competence and remain current in all aspects of technologies related to this position
  • Adapt promptly to new technologies
  • Work with minimal supervision to develop applications within required technology frameworks and project timeframes
  • Perform tasks with attention to detail and provide high quality deliverables
  • Develop appropriate technical and code documentation associated with application life cycle and ongoing support
  • Develop effective technical implementation plans at a task level and perform task execution in an appropriate and timely manner
  • Collaborate with peers by providing technical guidance on projects and tasks as needed; this may include the need to mentor team members
  • Perform daily tasks associated with support needs (e.g., providing guidance to the web editor liaisons and satisfying helpdesk tickets)
  • Maintain focus on long-term goals while producing immediate and near-term solutions
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with College end-users, Technology Services co-workers and technology vendors and consultants; this may include developing appropriate documentation and sharing knowledge in a one-on-one or group setting
  • Train the college community on new technologies as needed
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by Technology Services, Web Team, Marketing & Community Relations, and end users

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned degree from a regionally accredited higher education institution
  • One (1) year of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in computer programming or Web development
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in web development required
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in graphic and interface design for the web
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects under tight project deadlines
  • MCC uses a variety of technologies to develop and support our Web and mobile applications, must have in-depth experience utilizing many of the following Web programming environments and technologies: TYPO3, WordPress, JavaScript, Version Control, Markdown (for documentation), HTML5, SQL, XML, SQL Server and Oracle
  • Must have excellent judgement, problem solving, critical thinking and analytical skills with attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects under tight project deadlines is also required
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with IT colleagues and business constituents on new projects and ongoing initiatives
  • Ability to participate in paired programming and code review on projects
  • Experience developing technical documentation and source code
  • Ability to analyze and work with existing code
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in HTML, PHP, MySQL, XML, CSS, Adobe Photoshop, JavaScript
  • Skills in Windows Server, Lotus Domino, Linux, AWS, load balancers, caching
  • Experience with higher education ERPs such as Blackboard or Banner
  • Knowledge of web content management systems such as TYPO3, WordPress, or similar is highly desired
  • Ability to function within the following operating environments: UNIX/Linux (Red Hat), Windows Server, Internet Information Services, AWS, and load balancers
  • Legacy knowledge of these technologies is desired – VB, ASP (Active Server Pages), .NET, Lotus Domino
