To sustain and highlight the important work alumni volunteers do for our campuses, SUNYCUAD annually offers a $1,000 Alumni Confederation Volunteer Grant to support new and emerging alumni volunteer programs.
In 2013, Orange County Community College (SUNY Orange) received the grant to accomplish the following goals:
A portion of the grant was spent on preparations, materials and refreshments for Family Day. The event, held in conjunction with homecoming and reunion weekend, was free of charge and open to alumni, faculty, staff and community members. The SUNY Orange Alumni Relations staff and volunteers provided cider and donuts during registration.
An array of family friendly events and activities took place, such as face painting, sports clinics, games and contests. Student-led tours of the campus were held and the recently constructed Morrison Lab School childcare facility hosted a children’s obstacle course.
Admissions staff was on hand to answer questions and provide information to prospective students. The College waived the application fee for anyone who applied to SUNY Orange during the day.
More than 10 student clubs from across academic disciplines participated. The Dental Hygiene Club provided tooth brushing demonstrations and the Newburgh Campus’ Criminal Justice conducted a fingerprinting activity. The sustainability and biology faculty hosted a table for making pinecone bird feeders, along with a self-guided botanical tour and scavenger hunt featuring campus plantings.
The balance of the grant will be used to train alumni volunteers in the admissions process and develop a program in which volunteers accompany a college admissions officer to meetings with Orange County High School guidance counselors. Additionally, alumni in SUNY Orange’s Career Advisory Network mentorship program will receive training on how to make internships meaningful and valuable for students.
