Engagement Officer – Major Giving, The College at Brockport

The College at Brockport, State University of New York, is accepting applications for the Engagement Officer-Major Giving position.  Charged with dramatically increasing both the quality and size of Brockport’s prospect pool, the Division of Advancement will play the key role in the overall growth of constituent engagement and private philanthropy at the College as we begin planning for Brockport’s next major comprehensive campaign. This position will need to work collegially with the academic units and Alumni Engagement staff, carry a portfolio of approximately 175-200, work to qualify 125-150 prospects, and make a minimum of 125 meaningful connections per year. The Engagement Officer-Major Giving is expected to be a full and active member of the Advancement team and of the broader College at Brockport community, participating in strategy and planning, and contributing ideas and counsel, particularly as they relate to their assigned prospects. Extensive travel is required.

 Major Responsibilities 

  • Effectively manage a major prospect solicitation pipeline of 175-200 individual prospects. Initiate and/or strengthen relationships with major gift prospects; create strategies for and solicit donors capable of contributing gifts of $25,000 or more. Initial work will likely involve a high number of identification and qualification visits.
  • Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle: (1) initiate contacts with potential donors; (2) develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers and senior university administrators; (3) move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure; (4) make solicitations when appropriate; (5) maintain stewardship contacts with donors.
  • Continuously update the prospect management database with information related to donor strategies, contacts, qualification, proposals, and results and closely monitor all assigned prospects to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations.
  • Develop and enhance professional skills through seminars, conferences, training, and individual mentoring. Attend provided/necessary trainings and other meetings to support effectiveness within the position as required.
  • Consults with the Senior Director of Advancement, make one or two multi-day trips per month sufficient to meet the goal of at least 125-150 meaningful connections per year.
  • Ensure that assigned tasks are completed in compliance with various institutional and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous attitude at all times toward co-workers, internal and external customers, representing The College at Brockport, its programs, policies, and procedures in a positive and professional manner. Maintain effective working relationships to ensure institution-wide teamwork.
  • Assist in short and long-term strategic planning activities to create and implement meaningful development goals and objectives.
  • Work collaboratively and strategically with the College leadership, Brockport Foundation, volunteer leaders, and the entire Advancement team to identify, cultivate, and solicit donors in support of College priorities.
  • Serve as liaison to one school Dean and/or the Director of the Center for Global Education and Engagement. Develop strategies intended to build individual relationships with prospective donors that match the priorities of the school or department. In concert with the Dean and/or Director, develop and implement strategies for effective engagement of members who serve on advisory/ambassador boards.
  • Serve on campus committees.

Required Qualifications 

Bachelor’s degree appointment from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university; fundraising and/or relational, face-to-face sales experience; strong organizational skills; demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently, and work collaboratively as part of a team; ability to exercise good judgment, to demonstrate an understanding of ethics related to advancement activities, and to use discretion in interactions with prospects, donors, and volunteers; broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising; proven ability to conduct research, gather data, analyze information, and prepare effective, accurate, and timely reports and proposals in support of development objectives; successful experience in making cold calls as well as developing individualized cultivation and solicitation strategies; excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal skills; ability to work effectively within a diverse community; ability and willingness to travel and work on weekends; and, proficient in MS Office.

Preferred Qualifications 

Master’s Degree appointment from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university; general understanding of options for major and planning giving including information of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets, and estates; knowledge and experience working with the Banner student and prospect information system; and, professional experience working in higher education or a non-profit environment.

The College at Brockport’s Division of Advancement is comprised of the Offices of Giving, Donor Relations & Stewardship, Alumni Engagement, Advancement Services, and Finance. In addition, Advancement provides support to the volunteer boards of the Brockport Alumni Association and the Brockport Foundation.  Our mission is to increase the level of private support in order to sustain the quality and competitiveness of the College’s programs.
