17 Oct News: SUNYCUAD’s New Board Members – Part I
Meet SUNYCUAD’s eight newest board members in this three-part series. First up: Dawn Baumgarten, Matthew Colson, & Emily Hutchison.
Dawn Baumgarten – University at Buffalo
Dawn Baumgarten is a development professional with a 12+ year record of achievement in expanding, improving and managing a complex annual giving program on behalf of the University at Buffalo, an institution with nearly 250,000 alumni worldwide and a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities.
Dawn leads the annual giving team at UB which raises approximately $2 million in support of the student experience. She is responsible for strategic planning and implementation of a comprehensive multi-channel marketing program including mail, phonathon, email, and social media. Dawn oversees the solicitation of alumni, students, faculty and staff, and parents. She was also part of the leadership team that oversaw a three-year review and planning process to migrate annual giving from a service orientation to a more strategic, holistic and unified approach and creation of the UB Fund.
Prior to her work at UB, Dawn worked as a career counselor with the Buffalo Employment and Training Center where she worked with adults in career transition. She led individual and group career counseling classes and managed educational programs.
Dawn holds a Master of Science degree in Student Personnel Administration from Buffalo State College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the State University of New York at Fredonia. She is a founding member of the SUNY Annual Giving Group, recently presented at the Research Foundation for SUNY Administrator’s Symposium and hosted a SUNYCUAD Award for Excellence.
Matthew Colson – Stony Brook University
As executive director of Alumni Relations and Alumni Association Stony Brook University, Matthew Colson is responsible for the vision, strategy, and development of alumni engagement for Stony Brook’s more than 175,000 alumni worldwide. He works closely with the deans of thirteen schools and colleges across campus, the Stony Brook Alumni Association Executive Committee, and University Advancement colleagues to develop meaningful student and alumni experiences that will create and sustain lifelong relationships with the university.
Since his arrival in 2012, Matthew has inspired new alumni programs that have significantly engaged alumni in the fabric of the university, invigorated Stony Brook’s Alumni Association Board of Directors including 100% board giving, established a universal alumni culture throughout the University, increased organizational revenue by nearly double and strengthened the university’s alumni network with an aggressive expansion of national and international programming and chapter development.
Prior to joining Stony Brook University, Matthew served as Director of Alumni Relations and Stewardship at St. Joseph’s College, a small liberal arts, private college, for nearly 7 years. During his time at St. Joseph’s, he designed and implemented a comprehensive alumni relations operation from the ground up, creating and executing new programs that were sustainable and effective in recognizing and engaging alumni into the fabric of the College’s community.
Most recently Matt has been asked to speak at CASE and Academic Impressions Conferences on the topics of Board Development, Re-Engineering a Department/Program, Comprehensive Awards Programming and Building Campus Partnerships. He also co-chairs the Long Island Alumni Directors Network. A collection of 13 alumni director colleagues from the Long Island publics and privates, large and small. Who meet quarterly, to discuss industry trends, winning practices, shortcomings, campus/program challenges, staff management and the liking from a hyper-local level.
Emily Hutchison – SUNY Potsdam
Emily Hutchison joined the SUNY Potsdam Advancement team in 2009 and serves as the Assistant Vice President of Development. She currently oversees 8 – 14 staff members (depending upon current departmental organization), including Major Gifts, Planned Giving, Annual Giving, Advancement Services, Research and Prospect Management. Emily was responsible for leading the fundraising team that recently raised $33.3million as part of a 6-year comprehensive campaign. During her tenure, she has also overseen Donor Relations & Stewardship, Alumni Relations and Special Projects. Emily is responsible for campaign planning, and serves as a co-editor of the college’s alumni magazine. In addition, Emily serves as the second to the Vice President of Advancement, attending President’s Cabinet meetings and Foundation Committee meetings as requested and assisting with SUNY initiatives and reporting requirements.
Emily has extensive and diverse experience regarding Advancement functions, as well as Board service work, and serves as the Advancement liaison to the Development, Art Collection, Trusteeship and Campaign Steering Committees of the Potsdam College Foundation. She is passionate about higher education, and is a regular presenter at SUNYCUAD, for an international fundraising certification program, and more recently, for the CASE District II Conference. Prior to joining SUNY Potsdam, Emily had more than 25 years’ experience in non-profit social service leadership and fundraising; she was also a licensed therapist for many years. She maintains a long-standing grant writing/consulting business with clients throughout the U.S. Emily holds a BA from Baylor U and an M.Ed. in Counseling from U of North Texas.
