Leadership Gift Officer, SUNY Cortland

The Leadership Gift Officer works to build and enhance relationships with all constituents for the purposes of increasing philanthropic financial support of the Cortland College Foundation, Inc. Specifically; this position develops and implements strategies to increase philanthropic gifts for institutional support, primarily through gifts from SUNY Cortland alumni, parents, faculty & emeriti, community members and friends of the College. The position will help feed the pipeline of the College’s major gift program, bringing energy and innovation to identifying individuals that have the capacity of making gifts up to $25,000.

Major Responsibilities    Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Partner with members of the development team to determine strategies and action steps needed to identify and develop leadership and major gift donors.
  • Manage a personal portfolio of approximately 275 gift prospects and donors to ensure that timely steps are taken toward cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of gifts between $5,000-25,000.
  • Maintain computer records of contacts and solicitations, implement stewardship activities as gifts and pledge payments are received and work with major gift team on strategic movement of constituents from a leadership to major gift level.
  • Travel two(2) to three(3) days per month and schedule six(6) to eight(8) face-to-face visits with donor prospects to qualify, cultivate, solicit, and appropriately steward donors and prospective donors, with an emphasis on leadership gifts.
  • Create digital engagement and solicitation pieces that contain customized content for various constituent groups and develop programs to engage donors and prospects at the leadership giving level ($5,000-$25,000).
  • Analyze and report various statistics on his/her portfolio.
  • Independently, as well as in conjunction with the development team, coordinate donor campus visits and group-donor cultivation events as key steps in the preparation of donors to receive a leadership or major gift solicitation.
  • Oversee the completion of monthly solicitation activity reports to identify prospects that have been visited, number of days traveled and events coordinated.
  • Regularly attend Cortland College Foundation Development committee meetings, staff appropriate meetings, and provide reports on the progress of fund raising efforts. Also, attend college-sponsored events as appropriate.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

  • Under the direction of the Senior Gift Officer and/or Associate Vice President, the leadership gift officer will coordinate with the Director of The Cortland Fund, planned giving office and Executive Director for Alumni Engagement to identify prospects that will receive annual giving solicitations, leadership level giving solicitations and reunion gift solicitations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Fundraising, non-profit, corporate sales, admissions or alumni affairs experience.
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in developing Marketing campaigns.
  • Ability to organize, market and implement successful special events.
  • Computer literacy with various software packages including database systems.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
  • Periodic evening and weekend work will be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Higher Education fundraising preferred.
  • Graduate degree preferred.
  • Campaign experience preferred.
