Job Summary/Basic Function: The Director of Annual Giving is responsible for the strategic planning, execution and management of a comprehensive annual giving program that solicits gifts from alumni, friends and businesses. This candidate will join a highly successful fundraising team that operates in a collegial and supportive work environment as it seeks to ensure gifts (particularly unrestricted gifts) to meet the needs of the College, its students and its programs.
Job Requirements & Essential Functions of the Job: • Create annual strategy and segmentation plan to set dollar and participation goals for giving (particularly unrestricted giving) across all constituency groups
• Draft annual written appeals, gift proposals and other solicitation materials
• Manage a portfolio of annual giving leadership donors, which includes soliciting them for increased giving through personal contacts (some out-of-town travel required)
• Manage Business fund raising program, including conducting personal solicitations
• Manage gift society activities and special appeals, such as the President’s Club, Faculty and Staff Team Challenge program, Crowdfunding activities, National Day of Giving appeals, etc.
• Use data analytics to track giving, assess progress, and evaluate overall effectiveness of appeals in order to make modifications to appeal process in order to increase giving; prepare weekly, monthly and annual reports as applicable that reflect this information
• Collaborate with Donor Relationship/Stewardship team to identify best practices in acknowledgements to increase donor retention
• Supervise the Assistant Director of Annual Giving
• Develop and manage the overall budget for the program, including assessing the return on investments by appeal type
• Maintain positive relationships with volunteers, colleagues, business partners and other constituencies
• Actively participate in Advancement team meetings and in Potsdam College Foundation Board committee and full board meetings
• As requested, represent Advancement on campus committees, task forces and community groups
Required Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree
• 3 – 5 years professional work experience preferably in higher ed
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills
• Word processing, email, web, database and budget management systems proficiency
• Excellent organizational and process management skills
• Ability to manage projects and meet goals and deadlines
• Flexibility in job function and requirements
• Abiding commitment to public higher education
• Commitment to the College’s efforts in support of inclusivity and diversity
Preferred Qualifications: • Master’s degree
• Experience in gift solicitation, both through written appeals and in person
• Supervisory experience
• Budget management experience
